On Jan. 3, 1994, the first working day of the year, Burns & McDonnell officers and employee-owners gathered outside the world headquaters building as the officers burned the mortgage that allowed us to become an employee-owned compant. The burning signified the start of Burns & McDonnell as a debt-free, 100 perfect employee-owned company. Everyone celebrated the momentous occasion - and warmed up on a chilly day - with a bowl of hot chili served by the officers. The tradition has continured ever since.
